Inside view: a new hire's first day at 11:50

Person: a new employee in their mid-twenties, on their very first day. Scene: 11:50 a.m. They've handed in all the orientation paperwork, but no one has yet told them how lunch works. Their mentor has been on a call for 30 minutes, and people at nearby desks are one by one grabbing their wallets and phones and starting to get up. On the company messenger, they don't know a single person yet.

Reconstruct this scene from the new hire's inside view. It should capture the thoughts running through their head, their attempts to read what they see and what it means, and their body's responses (where their eyes go, their posture, what their hands do). Don't write sentences observing the new hire from outside — write with the new hire's eyes and inner voice. At the end, on a new line, propose one 'improvement to this team's onboarding' that became visible precisely because you stood in that viewpoint, in a form you could act on right away.
